I began working with children as a school counselor, and then in an office setting in 1983, seeing mostly children; I later began working with adults in 1985. I have been in private practice since 1998, but have worked in almost every type of facility, from schools to halfway houses, to hospitals and intensive outpatient settings.
I like working with all ages. Everyone was a kid at some point, and things that happened back then may still affect them today, but problems can happen at any stage of life and at any time because if you look at the stressor as a problem you can begin to find out what options you have to change it. And if you put the chosen option into action, it ceases to be a problem as it has been changed
I love working with anxiety disorders because people tend to see fast results. I did my thesis in stress reduction and I know many techniques to help people deal with stress, but depression and behavior problems are also a specialty because they are all interrelated, angry and/or depressed people tend to be stressed, stress reduction helps many people.
I like using coping skills as these tend to be fast acting: if a person uses coping skills, they will feel better, if they feel better, they tend to work at it more as they can tell it’s working for them. And I know many coping skills through my years as a therapist. I also listen more than talk; this is a very important part of communication that is sometimes overlooked because if you can find out what the problem is, the answer usually presents itself.
What motivates me is seeing people get better and it’s all interrelated because a person who is feeling better tends to work harder for it because they can see it within their reach; this helps the person feel they have some control over themselves and their environment which helps motivate them and their problem becomes less pronounced over time.
I feel I am a very forthcoming and honest person and this is important in therapy because if I am open, so will the person I am working with, which helps people feel comfortable. I also think listening is just as important, and I have been told I am a good listener.
